Tea Time: Building Bonds and Confidence Through Reading
As a homeschooling mama, it is important to me to incorporate special traditions into our daily routine. One tradition that has been a favorite is an idea from my friend, Amber, called "Tea Time."
Tea Time occurs in the afternoons, when the schoolwork (or at least mostly), and our home is “reset.” I gather my boys around the table, make a special snacks, and let them choose their favorite tea. Today's snack was popcorn drizzled with chocolate and sprinkles – a #teamhazen fav.
As we sit around the table, I light a candle to create a cozy atmosphere. Each boy picks out a book to share with the group, and we take turns reading aloud. This has become a valuable time for building reading confidence in my older boys. They have become more comfortable reading in front of others and have even gotten excited to share their next book of choice.
For our two younger boys who aren't reading yet, Tea Time looks a little different. Instead of reading, they take this time to tell us a story. This makes for a good break in the quiet for us to giggle and chat. Aside from it being hilarious I’ve noticed its a time for them to develop their storytelling skills and practice speaking in front of an audience.
Today's Tea Time was extra special because we had been snowed in for four days. Being stuck inside can be tough, but having this special time together made it a little more bearable (and quiet). As we sipped our yummy drinks, it was a sweet reiminder that these are the moments I’ve dreamed about. A reason we chose to homeschool.
Tea Time has become more than just a tradition in our home – it has become a time to bond, to learn, and grow. It is a time to slow down, to connect with each other, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. I am grateful for this special time with my boys, and I look forward to Tea Times as they grow….
